Whether your living space is deep in the forest, high in a skyscraper, on a suburban street, or anywhere near a real ocean, a breezy beach spirit is almost always the easiest refreshment. The look is a classic that’s evolved from its basic roots into something more organic and personal, but a relaxed, easy feel is always the line throughout (one of our favorite versions is the Surfrider Hotel in Malibu, above).
“Ultimately, that sand-in-the-toe feeling comes from a sense of expansion,” says Ariel Okin, the founder of Ariel Okin Interiors in New York, whose many projects include the time she built a raw loft at Union Square, full of odd desks and chairs, took over and turned it into a warm but breezy outpost for goop’s New York employees. Okin — who launched her addictive editorial and e-commerce site Fenimore Lane last year and is currently working on furniture, wallpaper, lighting and carpet collections, as well as her first book — walks us through some easy ways to do a Beach-inspired home refreshment no matter where you live.
