Maximize the space in your garden with trellises. Some types of plants—like cucumbers, tomatoes, and runner beans—need the extra support a trellis can provide, and others, like melons and squash, don’t need trellises but can benefit from being raised off the ground. When fruit is hung on a trellis and kept off the soil surface they are less susceptible to disease and going vertical means plants can grow vertically rather than spreading, opening up some garden plots on which to grow other crops. Trellises also have the benefit of making harvesting easier as the produce is at eye level and easier to find and collect.
