Since ancient times, the Japanese have had a tradition of creating gardens that capture the natural landscape. The gardens combine the basic elements of plants, water and rock with simple, clean lines to create a spiritual sanctuary, which in times of war and strife was the only place where they found peace.
Gardening expert and author of The Japanese Garden (Phaidon), Sophie Walker, explains that “the Japanese garden in its many forms is a place of contemplation” but that “there is always purpose and meaning”.
Therefore, when designing a Japanese-style garden, the aim should be to create a mysterious, calm and peaceful atmosphere and to capture some of the essence of nature in which to restore your inner harmony.
