Kitchen shelves seem such a prosaic piece of furniture; often neglected as a simple functional necessity. With a little imagination, however, shelving can become the focal point of any custom-designed kitchen.
Keep floating
The built-in look in high-quality kitchens is a thing of the past. With the advent of really large drawers that carry a lot of weight, the same demands are not placed on many closets these days, so decorative shelving comes into its own.
Many bespoke kitchen designers choose to break up wall storage with floating shelves. These thick box shelves with hidden hardware create a sense of space and provide space for displaying artwork or ceramics – a place that adds personality to the kitchen. They can be subtly lit with LED strips that can be dimmed or even colored to add even more interest.
suspended animation
A very current trend in luxury kitchens is hanging shelves from the ceiling. This does two things; It creates a subtle division of space without blocking the light and provides space for storing glassware or fine pottery. Roundhouse designers use hanging shelves in a variety of ways and in interesting materials such as brass with glazed shelves or blackened steel.
Build it yourself
Completely open shelves are also an option. Roundhouse London designers even used scaffolding boards, pipes and brackets to create industrial style open shelving. We also used brass strips that shelves are hung from to create an interesting detail.
